How do you choose a name for a blog? When you are choosing a blog name it’s easy to think you have a the perfect name. Then you check google and it’s already taken. I guess for all the differences in people, we must also have a lot in common, because finding a blog name can take a lot of time and brainpower!
My journey has been no exception. If you have been on my blog before you may have seen I started with a different name. I decided on that name after much thought. I truly thought it was going to be my forever name. Until I started to realize things about it that I didn’t like.
Here’s some of the reasons for my name change:
1. It was too common
A blog name should be unique and be personal to you and your style. Although I liked my name, it was just too common. There were actually several people on social media who had already taken the same name. I had thought of the name on my own but I really wasn’t cool with someone thinking I had their name. Also I didn’t want to get lost in a sea of others with the same name.
2. I wanted to have a bigger vision for my blog
The name I had before was Re-Purposed Mama. I liked it but in ways felt limited. The name implied I would be talking primarily about re-purposing. I love DIY, but I wanted to share other parts of my life and Re-Purposed felt too limiting.
Similarly I felt the “Mama” part was narrowing in a way I hadn’t wanted. The topics I wanted to talk about on my blog were primarily purposeful living & DIY. I felt these topics were really beneficial for all women.
Finding a New Blog Name
If you are trying to find a blog name like I was. Here are some tips to keep in mind.
1. Pick a blog name that defines you
A blog name should be unique to you, ideally you should love it. It should reflect something about who you are and what defines your blog. Ultimately your blog is your business so think about how you want to define it.
I started to think deeper. What really defines me for who I am? How do I want to define my blog?
For me the answer was my faith in Christ. So I started to think about my favorite stories in the Bible. I have always loved the story of the women at the well in John 4. So I was thinking of names that would somehow incorporate this story.
So I spent a lot of time soul searching trying to pinpoint a name. At one point I thought I had found the perfect name. It was beautiful, airy and kinda refreshing. I was mulling it over in mind at Target one morning, when I glanced at some toilet paper at an end cap. There in all it’s plastic wrap glory was the same name I had thought of. It was actually quite funny!
Try to think about the things that define you. Is it your faith, your family, your creative habits, what is it that you want to be known for? Try to incorporate a story or piece of that in your name.
2. Choose a blog name you love
After a few months I was getting frustrated with finding a new name so I kept Re-Purposed Mama. I was half surrendered to having a name. I didn’t realize it at the time but the fact that I wasn’t 100% sold on my name bothered me. I stopped putting my watermark on pictures because I was thinking I would need to change them all in the near future.
What I realized was I no longer had a blog name I was in love with, I couldn’t move forward. I decided it was time to stop and go back to square one. I took some extra time to think through names.
If you are not in love with your blog name it’s a good idea to set a deadline for yourself and focus on brainstorming new names. It will be worth it to find one you can truly say you love!
3. Run your blog name by other people, especially people who might see things differently than you
After being stuck with a name I was only semi happy with for several months. I decided it was time to ask for help. Run your name ideas by your close friends and family. There input is valuable because they know you well.
It was frustrating at times to continue to run into dead ends with names but it was worth it in the end. At times I thought I had a perfect name until I would run it by a friend or family member. They would interpret it completely different than I had intended. I think that feedback is usually a good thing, because people are different and see the world differently.
4. Ask others for ideas
For me there came a point I just couldn’t decide. So I decided to ask for help. I had told two blogging mentors of mine what I had been mulling over. Finally we came up with a name I loved!
I have been participating in an awesome mentor-ship program with two bloggers Marian Parsons from Miss Mustard Seed and Shauna West from Perfectly Imperfect. I reached out to Shauna while she happened to be visiting my city. So the three of us sat down for coffee.
It was a wonderful time of talking blogging and business. And the best part of all. I found a new name!
So my new name (Drumroll please) will be: A Well Purposed Woman. And using the tips above this is why I chose it.
Here’s the Reason I Chose my New Blog Name
A-I am an individual, made uniquely, fearfully and wonderfully in God’s image.
Well- It’s a play on words of sorts. One of my favorite stories in the new testament is the story of the woman at the well. John 4 talks about her encounter with Jesus. She is longing to be satisfied. She has searched everywhere to find what she thinks will satisfy. How many times in my life I have been like this woman.
Yet Jesus, meets with her. And shows only He can truly satisfy. He is deeper than any well and is a continual source of life and satisfaction. He never runs dry, and always nourishes the soul.
Purposed- Purpose is something I long for in everything I do. Running a home, caring for a family and myself, creating, loving and just plain living. Christ has given me a purpose to live and breathed purpose in everything I do.
Woman- for all of the feminine roles I play wife, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, niece, cousin and friend.
So moving forward this will be my new name! I will continue to post about similar topics. But I may be moving things around a little bit. I am excited about what is next for my blog and do feel like I have a bigger vision of where it will go one day. Maybe you can also see why I chose my new blog name with the tips I shared above.
Thanks for your patience as I sort through all this technical stuff on my site. I finally feel like I am ready to launch into the world. Thanks for coming along with me. I hope that you will continue to come by often and that we will grow together!
Also if you are starting a blog let me know what name you came up with!
