You may have noticed that things have slowed down a little bit for me on social media. Like I talked about last week I have been learning the importance of slowing down. And with the morning sickness for some reason I feel like the best place for me to be is anywhere but home. Which makes home projects and DIY a little less doable. But one thing I have been thinking about this week is getting around to sewing some slipcovers for my dining room chairs.
It’s been awhile since I re-upholstered and painted my dining room chairs. If you don’t remember I found some old cane chairs that I liked enough to use in my dining room. Although I am still on the look out for some that are even more in line with my style these have been working for the time being. The only problem is the seats are creamy white.
And white of any shade won’t last long in our home. So I decided I definitely need to make some dining room chair seat cover slipcovers if these chairs are going to last for more than a few weeks. We have been using towels on the chairs in the mean time. But now my pregnancy brain has had enough and wants real slipcovers on the chairs. (Doesn’t it seem that we really want things a certain way during pregnancy?)
Anyway I have been looking around on-line and on Pinterest for some ideas. Here are the top contenders I have found on Pinterest. Please let me know what style you like best in the comments below.
1. Ruffled seat cover with ties.
Miss Mustard seed. This is sort of a french country look with the frilly ties, ruffles and checkered print. I like the plaid color on these chairs because I feel they would cover stains or spills better. I also really like the ruffles and these slipcovers were some of the first work I saw of Miss Mustard Seed’s. So thankful now that she is my mentor, so of course I have to consider some of her seat covers.
2. Seat Cover with pleats
Tid bits. These are pretty similar to the ones above but the stiff fabric makes more of pleats than ruffles. I like these as much as the first ones. Of course I don’t think I would do them in the cream color she did because then I would face a similar problem of keeping them clean.
3. Seat Cover with straight seams and small pleats.
August Blue Slipcover Studio. I have also considered these which are dressed down a bit and don’t have as ruffly a bottom. I think they have a simpler look, with just the small pleated bottom.
4. Medium Length Skirt slipcover
The Decorated House. This slipcover has more of a straight seam look. Although the back of this one is pleated. I have also considered doing something like this but without the pleat in the back.
Of course you may have noticed that most all of these slipcovers are white, which would be a problem. So along with the style of the slipcover I am also going to have to decide on a fabric to use. Decisions, decisions, decisions!
The good news I have some excellent options here and truly if they turn out half as good as these ones I think I would be rather pleased. Stay tuned to see which ones I go with. But please comment below with which style is your preference and why. I love hearing from you!
As always thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you have a great weekend!

Hi Nicole, I used Annie Sloan chalk paint. Old white and a wash of cocoa. The walls in our home are Simply White by Sherwin Williams. I learned while painting our entire house that the colors may look completely different in your home than the store. So we always purchased a sample and applied it to a small patch on our walls. Thank you! Let me know how your dining set turns out. Elizabeth

I like option 2! They look pretty and classy, but not too frilly. I am always so intimidated by sewing projects—my mom and sister got all the sewing skills in my family! Good luck with this project! I’d love to see how it turns out!

Hi Laura, thanks for stopping by. I hope we can keep in touch after our mentoring is done. I like option 2 a lot too. Very classic and of course the white is nice. With the sewing don’t sell yourself short, remember everyone starts somewhere. I am by no means an expert but I love trying!

I like the August blue one. I generally like the straight, simple, clean edges. The Decorated house one feels a bit too long? All pretty though… you probably can’t lose.

Hi Melanie, I do think the length of the August Blue one is nice. Plus it does seem like it would be a little easier with the straight lines. We will see. Excited to choose one and get started. Have a good weekend! And talk with you soon.
