Today on Day 2 of 12 A Well Purposed Christmas Crafting I will be doing a tutorial on how to make an easy 30-minute pine cone wreath that you can make for less than $1. I made this mini pine cone wreath for next to thing as well, so if you have a lot of mini pine cones that’s a great way to make a mini pine cone wreath! If you missed day 1 on Fabric Christmas Trees with a free pattern make sure to go back and check it out.
So first of all I have a confession to make, I love pine cones! Pine cones are just another reminder to me of how God is the master artist. Like snowflakes each one is unique and I think rather elegant. So it is no surprise that I love making pine cone wreaths.
Today I wanted to show you how to make a very simple, very inexpensive pine cone wreath. The wreath cost me less than $1 to make. And after the pine cones were ready to use the wreath can be completed in about 30 minutes.
I have made several different kind of pine cone wreaths, and I have to say this is one of my favorites! It is simple and it is not as heavy in appearance or in actual weight as a larger pine cone wreath. It can be made larger or smaller depending on the wreath form you choose. And did I mention it cost less than $1 to make!
And yet I find this technique makes a high quality wreath. It does not seem as fragile as other pine cone wreaths I have made. The reality is that hot glue alone will not be the greatest at holding a pine cone wreath together.
This wreath is elegant and can actually be used for Christmas or Thanksgiving. It would be a nice wreath to use as you transition from fall to winter.
So let’s get to it!
Here’s what you need to make a simple pine cone wreath:
- Pine Cones (35-45)
- Wire wreath form (14″ in this tutorial, just 1 form makes 3 wreaths)
- Wire cutter
- Floral wire
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
- Twine or ribbon to hang wreath
- Evergreen floral greens (optional)
- Ribbon (optional)
Here’s how you make a simple pine cone wreath:
1. Prepare your pine cones for the wreath
If you will be using your wreath indoors or giving it as a present and haven’t prepared your pine cones yet. You don’t want to skip this step. Pause and follow this easy tutorial on how to get all the bugs and critters out of pine cones and prepare them for use.
2. Cut your wire wreath form
Using your wire cutter cut your wire wreath form apart at each of the vertical intersections. This is what will give you a simpler pine cone wreath.
You can actually make three wreaths from one wire form. I don’t know about you but I think that’s a great deal! You could make three pine cone wreaths for presents for less than $1!

3. Use floral wire and attach pine cones to wire wreath
Using your floral wire cut sections of floral wire wreath and use it to attach the pine cones to the wire. This does not have to look perfect at this point. Just work on attaching pine cones around the perimeter of the wire.
4. Fill wire wreath with pine cones
Now continue attaching the pine cones around the perimeter until the entire wire is full.
5. Use your greens and twist into wreath
I bought some of these evergreen branches on clearance last Christmas. Take the greens and wrap them around the pine cones. The greens will help with the last step.
6. Hot glue pine cones on top of the evergreen branches
Now that you have the greens twisted on among the pine cones. You can hot glue pine cones on the wreath wherever there are gaps or you want to make the wreath look fuller. Hot gluing onto the evergreen branches will give your pine cones a better surface to attach.
Tie a piece of twine on the top of the wreath to hang the wreath. You can add a bow if you like.
And that’s it!
Now you have a beautiful pine cone wreath that really is simple to make but very high quality. I think these are perfect gifts for a friend, school teacher or co-worker. Very inexpensive but with a little work this simple pine cone wreath makes quite a statement! And since you can make three from one wire wreath you might as well give one to each!
I am very pleased with this wreath because making a larger wreath with pine cones can be quite painstaking. This wreath is perfect for all the quick and easy wreath making folks, like me today!

Many thanks for the clear, concise tutorial! I am going to make another one now that I know how it’s supposed to be done. (Hot glue guns are wonderful, but leave a lot to be desired for this project.) Most of the pine cones in our area all look the same- so your variety makes a big beautiful difference… lots of interest!
