Summer is flying by! I can’t believe we are into August already. I hope that it slows down for a little bit. Because in Minnesota we have a very short window to get any painting or staining projects done outside. This week I am working on re-doing this really sturdy pine coffee table into modern farmhouse style.
Like many of the pieces I re-do this was a curbside pick up. My daughters and I were visiting my mom and we happened to notice this table along the side of the road.
The coffee table was really sturdy, and except for being outdated, was in excellent condition. It was solid wood. So what’s a gal to do but through it in the back of her SUV?
The coffee table speaks
You may remember I had re-did another coffee table in modern farmhouse style not too long ago. So I had a vision of what I would do to the table. With the added bonus of already having all the supplies at home. I planned to dark stain the top and use Annie Sloan Coco on the sides and legs.
Well, it’s funny because sometimes our furniture just speaks to us. And I think that’s why often times I change my mind when re-doing furniture. Because once I got to work on the coffee table I started to change my mind.
What I did so far to the coffee table
I use a hand sander and sanded it to the bare wood. This wood was really in absolutely perfect condition! No water marks, cracks or difficult spots. It felt like the coffee table was telling me it didn’t want to be stained dark. So I decided I would either keep the table completely bare or use a lighter stain.
Side note: it seems like whenever I start a sanding and staining project it is raining outside. Which complicates things a bit with the humidity. The stain can take a longer time to dry etc. here’s some tips for you if you are doing a staining project too.
What’s next for the coffee table
So that’s my plan for this week. To finish the coffee table. But would love to hear what you think before I get started on it.
My plan is still to paint the sides and legs of the coffee table in a neutral color. But if I leave the table top bare or lighter. I think I will use more of a gray color on the sides and legs. I think a dark wax will add depth and contrast if I leave the top of the table lighter.
Have you ever had furniture speak to you? Am I just imaging this or does it happen to anyone else. Of course, not audibly, but it definitely seems that this coffee table was giving me some tips on how it wanted to be made over. I will post the results later in the week. And maybe you can tell me what you think.
Hope you are having a good week too. Soak up all these beautiful summer rays as much as you can!
God bless,
