This tutorial will show you step by step how to make a fabric cross rag wreath. This fabric cross wreath could not be easier to make and it is the perfect wreath to make for Easter. This is a great way to use up extra fabric you might have on hand.
Today we are going to making this gorgeous fabric cross wreath for Easter! This cross wreath was so easy to make that it’s a great beginning wreath for almost anyone.
If you have seen these cross wreath forms at the Dollar Tree you may have wondered what to make with them. I saw them several times before I had any idea of what I wanted to make with them. Well this year I decided it was time to try my hand at making a cross wreath for Easter!
This fabric cross wreath uses the same technique as a standard rag wreath like one I made awhile back with a round wreath form. It ends up being kinda stunning even though there really are just a few steps to making it. But here’s a few tips before we get started!
How Much Fabric Do I Need to make a 14″ Rag Wreath?
You are going to want to have 2-3 yards of fabric on hand for this wreath. The amount of fabric will vary slightly depending on how tightly you pack the fabric. You can probably get away with having 2 yards of fabric if you don’t want your wreath to be super full. But if you do want to have a full wreath I would have at least 3 yards on hand.
What is the best fabric for a rag wreath?
The best fabric will depend slightly on what type of look you are wanting with your wreath. I have found thick cotton fabric or duck cloth fabric works well for rag wreaths. The ends tend to fray slightly but not too much and the strips tend to stand up fairly well. The fabric tends to blend nicely together in the end. As you will see below it will work well to cut your fabric into 1″ x 8″ strips with this type of fabric.
Now let’s get starting on making this beautiful fabric cross wreath!
What supplies do I need to make a fabric cross wreath?
- 14″ Wire Cross Wreath Form
- 2-3 Yards of Fabric
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Twine
- Easter Embellishments
How do I make a rag Wreath?
Here’s a video tutorial on how to make fabric cross wreath:
Step 1: Cut your fabric into 1″ x 8″ Strips
The first step of making this beautiful cross wreath is to cut out your fabric strips. Start by cutting 1″ strips with your fabric and then cut the 1″ strips every 8 inches so you have 1″ x8″ strips, like the ones below.
Step 2: Attach your fabric strips to your cross wreath form
Next you are going to slip tie all of your fabric strips onto your cross wreath. Take your fabric strips and fold them in two.
Place the folded strip underneath the wire wreath form and then pull the ends of the strip through the loop of the strip like below.
Then pull it tight so that it is attached to your wreath form like below.
And now you are going to just repeat this same step over and over again until your entire cross wreath is filled. I started with the middle section of the cross and filled in each section. Push your fabric strips together to get a full look with your wreath as you go.
Continue tying your fabric onto your wreath until it is completed covered.
Step 3: Embellish your cross wreath for Easter
The last step is to embellish your cross wreath. I took this little wreath of greens and attached it on top of the cross wreath with some floral wire. You could use floral picks, other greenery or dried flowers as well.
Next I added a piece of burlap ribbon with some floral wire. Then I hot glued a “He is Risen” cut out on top of the ribbon.
I love how it turned out! It actually is prettier than I imagined it. And it is a reminder of how much God loved us that He willingly gave His life for me! What a beautiful reminder of that love!
But I wasn’t sure if I wanted it on my regular frame in the living room or if I liked it better hanging on a mirror in the living room. What do you think?
Thanks for crafting with me! And always let me know if you have any questions or if you think you wil be making one of these cross wreaths this Easter!
Take care and God bless!
P.S. IF you missed it. I also made a fabric heart wreath for Valentines Day that uses a slightly different technique at making a rag wreath.
