Learn how to make a star out of string and beads this Christmas for some fun decorations. These cute Scandinavian stars are made with string and beads. They are a beautiful reminder of the first Christmas in Bethlehem.
On Day 7 of our Craft a Day Countdown to Christmas we are making STARS out of string and Beads!
If you like simple and natural looking Christmas decorations, then I think you will like these little stars. I first saw these stars in a watercolor illustration and I had to figure out how to make them! So today I am sharing with you this simple step by step tutorial to making stars from string and beads!
So let’s get started!
Here’s the supplies needed to make stars out of string and beads:
- 30 Wooden beads with holes
- 100″ of string, thread or twine
- Embroidery needle
- Scissors
Here’s a video tutorial on how to make stars out of string and beads:
Want a Kit Already Made for You?
If you would rather just have a kit mailed to you with all the instructions and supplies ready to go. You can purchase a ready made kit if you want all the supplies and instructions in one place. You can check out pre-made kits here: wooden star craft kit.
Step 1: Cut your string to size
You are going to start by getting your string ready. You will need about 90-100″ of string to make one star. (It’s better to have more left over than not enough). Cut off your length of string and fold your string in half.
Now thread both ends of the string onto your needle. So one end will be threaded through the needle and the other end will be a loop.
Step 2: Add 12 beads onto your string
The first step is to string 12 beads onto your string.
Once the beads are on the thread. Pull the needle through the loop on the other end. It should make a circle with the beads.
Step 3: Make the points of your star with your beads
Now add two more beads onto your needle.
Then skip the bead right below those two beads and pull your needle through the next bead like below.
Pull the thread through, this is the beginning of your first point. Now you are just going to repeat the same step. Add two more beads to your string and pull your need through the bead next to the one at the base of the two beads.
Now continue adding two beads and pulling your needle through the neighboring bead all the way around your circle. You should have added a total of 12 beads and should have the start of 6 points on your star like the picture below.
Step 4: Add the tip of your stars’ points
Now you are going to add the tip to each of your stars’ points. You will start by threading your needle through the right side bead of the two you just added. Adding the bead and then going back down through the bead on the left side that you added.
The arrows in the picture above show how you will pass your needle through the beads. You will add a bead on each of the tips. Just know you are adding beads to the tips of your stars.
Continue adding tips to each of your stars points all around the circle. So you will have added 6 more beads.
Now your star is complete. You should have 30 beads in total. Pass your needle through the beads at the base of your last tip. Then bring your needle through the neighboring tip again. You will hang the star with the remaining thread or string. Cut off any extra thread or string.
I absolutely LOVED making these star ornaments. They are so simple and beautiful. When my daughter got home from school I was excited to share the stars with them.
My 6 year old daughter decided to make one while my older daughter was doing her homework. She caught onto making it pretty quickly so I think it is a craft that anyone could learn to do.
