Learn how to make an outdoor planter for Christmas. This step by step tutorial will show you how you can make an outdoor planter this winter by gathering items from your own yard or a friend’s! An outdoor planter is a fun way to decorate your front stairs or porch.
Day 9 of our Craft a Day Countdown to Christmas and we are going outside to make an outdoor planter for Christmas! If you love outdor planters but have a bit of sticker shock when you see how much they cost. Then I wanted to create an alternative for you. Today we are going to make an outdoor planter for Christmas!
My hope is that you can make one of these outdoor planters for Christmas at a low cost or no cost to you! In total this planter cost less than $5 because I already had a planter with soil. So if you have most of the supplies available I hope you can make one for little to no cost.
Last week I shared about my wood slice ornaments. I made these ornaments from a birch tree my neighbor cut down a few years ago. Well today I used more of them in my outdoor planter. Everything from these planters was taken from my yard or my neighbor’s (with permission of course), with the exception of a few items.
I also hope that you won’t be intimidated by making an outdoor planter even if you don’t have much experience. Because I wasn’t completely comfortable with making my own at first but I was surprised at how simple it was!
So let’s get to it!
Here’s the supplies to make a DIY Outdoor Planter for Christmas:
- Planter with Soil
- Evergreens
- Birch Logs
- Dogwood Branches
- Berries
- Pine Cones
- Floral Wire
- Shears

Here’s how to make an outdoor planter for Christmas:
Step 1: Place Your Birch Logs in your planter
The first step in making your planter is to place your birch logs. I used a planter that I suse for summer and fall flowers. So it was already filled with soil, I just dug a hole in the soil and inserted my branches. When you place the branches make sure Ythey to go down deep enough so they will stand up and you can see them.
If you are using a new planter fill it with soil but place your birch logs in your planter as you pour the soil around the logs. Just make sure the logs stand tall enough out of the planter to still be visible when the greens and other items are added.
Step 2: Fill in your planter with your evergreens:
The next step is to fill the planter with your evergreens. Cut your branches to about 2 ft and fill in the areas of soil around the birch logs. Add a lot of greens in between the two logs. Fill in the sides, behing and in front of the logs.
Step 3: Add other types of branches to highlight the evergreens
Now add your dogwood branches or other greens to highlight the evergreens, I only used the one type of greens and added dogwood brances around the greens.
Step 4: Add pine cones, berries and other items to decorate your planter
The next thing I did was add large pine cones onto some of the dogwood branches. Use your floral wire and just wrap the pine cones around the dogwood branches.
Add berry branches to the planter. I did not have any berry branches so I just took a bag of berry picks from the Dollar Tree and twisted them onto the dogwood branches along with the pine cones.
And that’s really it! Now you have a beautiful outdoor planter for Christmas that costs next to nothing!
I hope you are inspired by this post at just how possible it is to make your own outdoor planter for Christmas! And the best part is it can be used from year to year. The birch logs, pine cones and other faux items can be saved.
Here is the planter on our front stairs. Thankfully my husband said it looks like an outdoor planter we would purchase so I am happy with that! What do you think? Would you consider making your own now?
