Crafting an American flag from fabric scraps is an easy project that combines creativity and makes good use of all those fabric scraps!
Today I am going to show you how to make these cute little fabric flags out of fabric scraps. This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. And if you are hosting a patriotic get together these little flags are easy to whip up! All you need to make these little flags are a few red, white and blue scraps.
I don’t like to spend much money on decor for Memorial Day or the 4th of July. In the past I shared 10 ways to make a patriotic display using tin cans. And today we are going to use up fabric scraps, lace and other items in your craft stash.
So if you are ready, let’s start crafting!

Here’s how to make scrap fabric American flags:
Step 1: Choose and Cut out your fabric
Choose red and white fabric for the base of your flag. Print off your American flag pattern. And cut out your 6″x4″ shaped flag. This is a good size for a small flag plant poke or a bowl filler.
Next cut out your blue square. You can use the free pattern or just make it a few inches by a few inches. Since these are scrap fabric flags you may want a less finished look so don’t worry to much about dimensions being perfect.
Step 2: Add lace or ribbon along the white lines of fabric (Optional)
This next step is optional but I highly reccommend it! Add lace to the white lines of your red fabric to make some white lines that stand out. You can sew a stitch to hold them in place or use hot glue and glue them on.
Then in order to add some white to the blue squaer we are going to add a grain sack scrap heart in the center of our blue square. You can sew it or glue it in place.
Step 4: Add a backing to your fabric flag
Next we are going to add a backing to our fabric flags. Cut out a 6″ x 4″ piece of fabric and line it up with the flag. Now just stitch around the flag on all side.
Leave a 1/2″ -3/4″ on the bottom left corner of the flag. This will be where you insert your pole to prop your flag on.
Step 5: Insert your wooden dowel into your flag
Insert your wooden dowel in between the two pieces of fabric through the opening you left on the bottom left corner. In order to close the opening completely, just hot glue it so that the dowel stays in place.
Now that your dowel is in place your flag is ready to use! These flags are really cute to just stick into a decorative plant or bowl. As I mentioned I don’t go over board with decorating for Memorial Day or the 4th of July. So just little patriotic pops here and there are a nice touch.
