Learn how to make DIY Easter Gnomes. Easter gnomes are adorable and have that irresistible. A free pattern to make DIY Spring or Easter Gnomes is included. These little bunny Easter gnomes are another way to make DIY sock gnomes.
Since I posted DIY sock gnomes over Christmas there has been so much interest in these little guys. We made Valentine’s Day gnomes in February and now I am sharing Easter gnomes with you for a new idea for Spring. I created two variations of patterns for Easter gnomes.
I have seen two main types of Easter gnomes. Because I couldn’t decide which one I liked better. I decided to make a pattern for both of them.
The first pattern is a small hat with two bunny ears. This is a smaller hat that has two big ears coming out of the top of it. For this pattern I was inspired by a pair of mittens I saw on clearance for 75 cents! The top part of the mitten looked just like a gnome hat to me. So Viola! a small hat pattern was born.
The second pattern for DIY Easter gnomes is a more tradition gnome hat that has two years sticking out of it. This is the same pattern I used on my original gnome post, you will just add two bunny ears to the front of it.
Just download the patterns below and let’s get started on making our DIY Easter Gnomes!
Here’s what you need to make DIY Easter Gnomes
- Free Easter Gnome Pattern
- Small piece of fabric (1/4 yard will make about 10)
- Gray and Pink felt pieces
- Faux fur
- Wooden noses
- Wood kebab skewers
- rubber band
- Hot gun and glue
- poly fil
- rice
Here’s how you make DIY Easter Gnomes
Step 1: Cut out your patterns
The first step is to choose the fabrics you will be using. Then download and cut out your patterns. I used fabric scraps and mittens to make the hats for these gnomes. Cut out the triangle pattern from the faux fur. Then cut out two different ear sizes from the felt. You will need to two big ears and two little ear pieces.
Step 2: Hot glue kebab skewers onto ears
One way you can make bunny gnome ears stay up is by hot gluing a kebab skewer in between the two layers of ears. You can cut the kebab skewer and just go the distance of the ears.
Or another option is you can insert the kebab skewer into your sock without cutting it. This will reinforce the ear even more.
Step 3: Hot glue the ears onto the Easter gnome hat
Next you want to take your Easter gnome ears and hot glue them onto your hat. For the smaller hat hot glue the bunny gnome ears to the top of the pattern.
For the gray hat I put my ears around the rim of the hat. You can also put them up a little higher. It’s totally up to you and what you think looks best. I do think that the ears look a little better when they are closer together, and the nose is in between them.
Tip: It might work better for you to attach the ears once the gnomes body is assembled and the hat is on the gnome. This will give you more of an idea of where to place the ears.
Step 4: Fill your DIY Easter gnome sock
Now you will fill your sock with rice and polyfil. Start by pouring at least a 1/2 cup of rice in the bottom of your sock. I totally recommend using rice or something to weigh down the bottom of your sock. If you only use polyfil your gnome will most likely fall over.
Then stuff the remaining portion of your sock with polyfil. I usually end up making a gnome body that is about 6″ tall.
Tie off the sock with a band. And trim the top of the sock.
Step 5: Hot glue the Easter gnome parts on the sock
Now it’s time to put your little Easter gnome all together.
Hot glue your hat on your gnome.
Hot glue your beard and nose on your Easter gnome.
If you waited to hot glue your Easter gnome ears until now. Hot glue them on now.
Step 6: Attach a felt band under ears (optional)
The last step is optional and a matter of preference. You may think it looks a little neater to add a felt band across the rim of your hat. In between the beard and your ears. I did this and think it adds a nice touch to the Easter gnomes. Just cut a 1/2″ felt band that will fit around your hat and attach it with hot glue.
But otherwise that’s it! Now you have cute little DIY Easter gnomes for your spring decor! These Easter gnome bunnies are also a fun gift for children’s Easter baskets or a friend!
