Painting the Hope Chest Sage Green

Learn how to paint your furniture sage green. Green is a beautiful and trendy color right now, transform an old piece with a new flair! Sage green is a earthy and natural color that fits in with Bohemian style furntiture.

Yesterday I shared how I was planning to paint the bottom of the hope chest. And the day before I shared how I found this beautiful chest! Today I am sharing how I painted the hope chest sage green!

I kinda love green lately so when I was picturing this hope chest with a modern look I was picturing it sage green! Sage green is the color of our home and it is such a earthy color it looks good in a lot of different spaces.

To make the sage green I was looking for, I actually mixed a custom group of paints. I had some Miss Mustard Seed Ironstone on hand, and some green chalk paint along with some black chalk paint. So I mixed the three colors together and Viola! a custom green for the bottom of the chest.

I like how the black and Ironstone neutralized the green a little more and made it look even more sage-y!

Here’s the supplies needed to paint your furniture sage green:

  • Chalk Paint
  • Chalk Paint Brush
  • Clear Wax
  • Rags

Here’s how I painted the hope chest sage:

I put two coats of chalk paint onto the chest. Here is the chest after the first coat of chalk paint. The coverage was actually really good, but I think this was because the chest did have one coat of cream milk paint on it already while I was sampling colors.

I allowed the paint to dry for 24 hours and then I applied a second coat of the paint. I was feeling pretty good about the chest after the second coat of paint was applied.

After the second coat of paint had dried I applied clear wax on all the painted areas. I rubbed the wax into the piece and it was pretty much ready to be finished.

The top is already sanded down to the bare wood so I will just add a coat of polyurethane on top and the chest will be almost ready to sell!

So I would love to hear from you which of these knobs do you think look best? Or do you think something different altogether? Let me know what you think below! You might be able to guess which one I like!

How would you finish the chest? Let me know which knob you would choose!

A.
B.
C.
D.
E.

I actually thought a lot of these knobs looked pretty with the chest. But stay tuned for tomorrow I will share with you the final makeover!

Until then,

I absolutely love how the Hope chest turned out. But I’m still wondering what you’re going to do with the 4 original knobs. I love them and have been looking for some like that. Your current choice was perfect! Loved the choice.

Love the sage green. I recently moved into a new home & couldn’t afford to replace the dated 1980’s wood paneling that is below the chair rail in the kitchen, hallway & laundry room and Sage is the color I painted it for an inexpensive update. It turned out great…lots of compliments. I think knob E would be a great choice. It’s different,..A, B & C are all ok…but safe and unassuming. D at least gives some depth because of it’s color but E is the one that adds personality & says “Hey, take a look at me”

Hi Susan, that’s a great idea! Sometimes a fresh coat of paint makes such an impact at such a low cost. I like your input, I do agree. I think D and E give it a little more character and are more unique. Thanks for your help! Elizabeth

Amen! Praise the Lord for His restoring power. God is so good!
I am not typically a fan of green, but the Sage green color that you mixed is beautful. My favorite knob is D.

I like A the best I think its simplicity lends to the modern flair without overtaking the sage green . Although I do love knobs D & E 🙂

I love the color, and knob E is my favorite. I have no experience with painting furniture, so I’m curious whether there’s a specific reason to use chalk paint. Is it a preference for the texture, or is there something about it that makes it best for use on furniture?

Thank you Mary Beth, and thank you for your input! Yes chalk paint is very simple to use with furniture. It does not require sanding, priming or any other preparation. It is a paint that covers very well and is made to be used on furniture. Elizabeth

I vote for D. Some of the others looks nice, but as far as using them, the handle, etc., would not be as easy to use .

Hi Barb! Thanks for your input. I do like D a lot, I think the color and style match the hope chest well. And when lifting the chest the handles would come in handy. ELizabeth

I love gold….I can’t tell if A is silver or gold, so I’m going with knob D. But I think the green is great! I’ve picked a sage green to paint my office…now to just get corporate to approve it. 🙂
