Welcome to Day 22 of our Countdown to Christmas- 10 gift wrapping ideas that are free but high end looking. Gift wrapping is a fun way to add something a little special to your gift. And today we are just going to use items we already have on hand.
Because gift wrapping can be truly beautiful, environmentally friendly and totally free! Sometimes thinking outside of the box (no pun intended) is all it takes.
Today’s gift wrapping ideas can be made with any type of wrapping paper. But since we are focusing on free handmade ideas we are going to use paper grocery bags or craft paper as our base.
I hope today’s gift wrapping ideas inspire you to get creative with your own ideas! So let’s get started with our 10 gift wrapping ideas that are handmade and budget friendly.
1. Mini Evergreen Christmas Tree Gift Wrapping Idea
Our first idea is to make a little Christmas tree on top of our gift. I had these little evergreen stems and just cut them to make a little Christmas tree on the top of my gift.
Hot glue them in place. And you can also embellish the tree with dried berries, jingle bells, wood beads or other decorative finishes.
Tip: You could also use pipe cleaners or ribbon to make the little Christmas tree.
2. Washi Tape Christmas Tree Gift Wrap Idea
Similar to the first gift wrapping ideas, here’s another idea for making a handmade design on the top of your gift box. Wrap your gift in craft or plain paper and then add a Christmas tree with washi tape. Embellish the Christmas tree gift wrap with a star salt ornament or buttons as ornaments.
I think this is a cute idea for children’s presents. My daughter remarked how she really liked how this gift was wrapped for her sister!
Tip: You can do this same technique with ribbon. Just place a piece of double sided tape on top of your box and move your ribbon back and forth in the shape of a Christmas tree.
3. Chunky Yarn Gift Wrapping Idea
There are so many cute uses for chunky yarn including gift wrapping!
Chunky yarn adds a cozy and special touch to presents wrapped in craft paper or wrapping paper alike. Use up some of the chunky yarn you have left over from the chunky yarn star wreath and tie it on top of a gift.
4. Raffia and Tassel Gift Wrapping Idea
Use raffia you may have on hand from other craft projects and add a tassel. We made these names of Jesus tassels earlier this month and they are a cute addition on top of any gift. Adding a plain tassel or pom pom is also a cute idea.
5. Gift Wrap in Fabric
Instead of using paper, try fabric as gift wrap. This is an eco friendly way to wrap, and adds a unique twist to your gift wrap. I wrapped this little box with a tea towel. It is a cute idea for gifting baking supplies or other kitchen items. Add dried oranges, cinnamon or evergreen picks to the top of the gift.
6. Use evergreen wire as ribbon on top of a gift
Instead of ribbon, try using evergreen wire. Just twist different pieces together to get an evergreen that goes all the way around your present. Then embellish the top of the present with dried oranges, pine cones and a little wooden name tag.
7. Work of Art Gift Wrap
Use craft paper and paint or have your child make a design on the top of your wrapping paper. This work of art is like another present in itself to the recipient. If you want to paint something on the present yourself, here are 4 watercolor designs you could consider.
8. Brown Paper Bag Gift Wrap
If you have an unusual shaped gifts that doesn’t necessarily need a box, a brown paper bag is a nice alternative. This is especially good for handmade gifts. Use a hole punch and string evergreen pics, pine cones, twine, dried oranges, berries, cinnamon sticks or other embellishments.
9. Picture Gift Wrap Idea
An easy way to add some extra character to a present is to attach your Christmas card or other photograph. Use twine and tie a bow around your gift. Then take a small clothespin and use it to hold a photograph or Christmas card.
Tip: Instead of a photograph you could also attach a Bible verse or other words of encouragement to the recipient.
10. Make your own ribbon gift wrap
Yesterday we made our own ribbon out of fabric. So today’s last idea is to use handmade ribbon on the top of your gifts this Christmas. Embellish gifts with natural decorations like pine cones, oranges or salt ornaments.
