5 Tips to Save Money & Time with No Sew Drop Cloth Curtains

I posted earlier this week about how to hang drop cloth curtains. They were a perfect fit for my upstairs living room. But as I was writing the tutorial, I thought it would be helpful to share some tips I learned.

If you didn’t see my earlier post. I will mention again that drop cloths are typically used during painting projects to keep floors, furniture and anything else from getting paint on them. But since they also are a very large neutral piece of sturdy fabric they can be used around the house for many farmhouse style home decor items- like curtains!

Here’s a picture from my living room where I am currently using drop cloth curtains.

I loved that the drop cloths are so long and wide. They were exactly what I needed. If you are thinking of getting some too, check out these 5 tips to save you money and time before you run out to your local hardware store and purchase some for yourself!!

Tip 1: Make sure you buy the right style of drop cloth.

When I went to purchase my drop cloths I did like I usually do and shopped around for the best price. Although I found the best price I chose a style that had seams running down the middle. So make sure that you pick up the correct type of drop cloth. The right height and no seams! Here are the ones I purchased.

Tip 2: Drop cloths have different weights.

Another difference among drop cloths are the weights. Make sure to purchase the weight you want. I used medium weight drop cloths and those worked well for the look I was going for. If you purchase a heavier weight option. They may be too rigid and not the look you are going for. So pay attention to the weight.

Tip 3: Drop Cloths are heavy!

Make sure that you have a sturdy curtain rod and one that can support the weight of the drop cloths. If the curtain rod is not sturdy it will start to droop in the middle. When you push the curtains out to the sides they may also fall off occasionally. 🙂 Ask me how I know?

Tip 4: Shop when Painting Supplies go on sale.

If you have some time to spare then you might consider waiting until paint supplies go on sale at your local hardware or paint store. I purchased some at regular price but then this weekend noticed there was a Memorial Day sale at Home Depot. The drop cloths were like 60% off so I saved quite a bit of money by shopping on a sale day. Like I said they were just $10.88!

Tip 5: Drop Cloths can also be bleached White.

If you find you don’t like the color or feel of drop cloths once you bring them home. Consider bleaching them white. Once I hung my curtains in the living room. I wasn’t so sure about the color. I started to think that I wanted to try white drop cloth curtains.

I am working on creating a post on how to bleach them right now. So will try to show you them next week. With the bleach the drop cloths will obviously lighten up and the texture becomes much softer. Even if I don’t use them in my living room, I will definitely find some use for them!

I love how these curtains add such beauty to a room. For such a low price and in just a few minutes you can have these beautiful editions in any room of your home! Hopefully these tips will make your drop cloth curtain buying and hanging process a breeze!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Oh yesss, you bet! I am totally doing this! I have been looking around ever since we moved into our new home for simple, good looking curtains for our living room. We have a farm house/ industrial theme going in our house and these are the perfect compliment for our furniture and big exposed wood beams. Thank you so much for sharing this affordable and awesome idea, Elizabeth!!
