If you love beautiful chunky yarns, than this braided chunky yarn tutorial is for you!
I kinda fell head over heals for these beautiful chunky yarns last fall. And I just had to find some creative ways to use them. I made the no knit yarn pumpkins in the fall and today I going to show you how to make a beautiful crochet heart wreath. It is a fairly easy tutorial and if you have wanted to learn how to crochet this may be just the thing to get your feet wet.
You do not need any prior crochet experience because you can make this braided chunky yarn wreath with just two easy steps. I was inspired to make this wreath from Yarn & Chai’s yarn wreath. The only difference it you will be using a heart form and there are a few tricks with that.
But let’s get started!
Here are the supplies you need to crochet a braided yarn wreath for Valentine’s Day:
- Size 7 Braided Chunky Yarn
- Crochet Hook that matches your yarn
- Foam heart wreath form
- Scissors
- Hot Glue and Gluestick
- Felt or other embellisments
- Twine or ribbon to hang the wreath
Here’s how you make a crochet a braided heart yarn wreath:
Follow the tutorial below or watch the video on How to crochet a Btsided Yarn Heart Wreath.
Step 1: Tie your yarn onto your heart wreath form
The first step is to find the end of your chunky yarn. Tie the yarn onto your wreath form. This does not need to be anything fancy. Just do a quick knot to hold the yarn onto your wreath form. The knot should be to the left of the center of the heart wreath form.
Step 2: Crochet your first loop onto the wreath form
Taking your crochet hook, lay it on top of the knot you just made. The hook should be up towards the ceiling and facing your left side.
Now pull the chunky yarn through the center of your wreath form. Go behind your crochet hook and then wrap it around your hook (see below).
Now pull the yarn around the wreath form and loop it onto the top of your hook.
Pull the yarn through the first loop. The video above may be helpful for you to see this step. But now your yarn will be secured on your hook like below.
Step 3: Crochet your braided chunky yarn around your heart form
This next step will be the main step in crocheting your yarn around the heart to form your braid. Just like the previous step again start by pulling your yarn through the center of your wreath form, going behind your hook wrap the yarn around the hook. You will have two loops now on your hook because of the previous step.
Again wrap the yarn around the outside of the wreath form and grab it with the end of your hook.
Now this is the primary difference between the first and second step, pull your yarn through the two loops.
Now all you have to do is repeat this step until you get all the way around your wreath form.
And boy doesn’t it start looking pretty!?!? I love the chunky white yarn on this wreath form.
Step 4: Secure the yarn ends in place on your heart wreath
Crochet all the way around your wreath form until you cannot crochet any closer to the beginning knot you made. Cut off about 10″ of yarn. Then pull the yarn through your last loop.
Untie the knot you made at the beginning of your heart.
Take the yarn end and braid it through the last braid you made on your heart. I just use my hands to do this step. Then take the other end and braid it through the first braid you made on your heart. Try to make it look the same as the rest of your braid. When you are satisfied with how it looks. Hot glue the ends in place.
And that’s it! A beautiful crocheted heart wreath! I love the warmth of these and think they could actually work for more seasons than just Valentine’s Day. I am still playing around with how I will display these in my home but aren’t they pretty?
The fun part is you can leave them plain or add ribbon, felt flowers or other embellishments. What do you think? Would you leave them plain or add ribbon or felt flowers? I was playing around with the gray heart wreath below.
But whatever you decide I hope you enjoy making these braided heart wreaths this Valentine’s Day or anytime of the year for that matter!
No time to make it now? No worries, just pin it for later!
Thanks so much for stopping I hope you will have fun making these cozy little hearts to let someone know how much you love them this year!
Take care and God bless!
