Learn how to make a rianbow from yarn. This quick and easy tutorial will guide you through making a rainbow ornament. These rainbows are fun for kids but also for adults.

Today is day 3 of our Jesse Tree craft along to Christmas. We are reading Genesis 6-9 which is the story of Noah and the flood. God sends the flood in response to man falling away form Him. The rainbow is a sign that is given to Noah after the flood as a promise from God that He would never flood the earth again.
“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” – Genesis 9:13
Here’s the supplies need to make a yarn rainbow ornament:
- 30” of Chunky White Yarn
- 3 Coordinating Yarns of Different Colors
- Floral Wire
- Hot Glue Gun and Gluesticks
- Twine
- Scissors
Here’s how to make a yarn rainbow ornament:
Step 1: Cut three strips of yarn that are similar in length
Take your chunky white yarn (size 7) and cut it into 10″ strips roughly. You will want a 1/4″ variation of the three strips. So a 9 3/4″, 10″ and 10 1/4″ length.

Step 2: Wrap the chunky yarn strips with wire
The next step is to wrap the yarn lengths with wire. The wire will help make the yarn more firm. Take the wire and wrap it all the way around.

Step 3: Wrap the chunky yarn lengths with colored yarn
The next step is to wrap the chunky yarn with three different colors of coordinating yarn. You can start by tying or gluing the end of the colored yarn on the chunky yarn. Then just wrap the yarn all around the chunky yarn covering it completely. Repeat for the other colors.

Step 4: Glue or tie the yarn lengths together
Before adding the lengths together. Take a piece of twine and tie it to the top color layer of your rainbow. This piece of twine will be how you hang your rainbow ornament.
Then hot glue in between the different colored lengths so the rainbow sticks together. You can also use wire or twine to tie them to one another.

And that’s it! Now you have a beautiful yarn rainbow ornament to hang on your Christmas tree!
